Covington, Louisiana has a rich heritage dating back to the 18th century. The
community originally known as Wharton was a landing on the north side
of Lake Pontchatrain. It quickly became popular for the exportation
of tar, pitch, turpentine, and charcoal, in addition to lumber, sand,
bricks and lime. The small community has a history during the civil
war as the northshor headquarters for General Butler, and the city
has embraced its roots for over 200 years.
